For the past few decades, Utah has increasingly become a one-party government. As a result, our values for choosing candidates have been altered. In selecting candidates, we have put too much emphasis on parties and platform. However, I believe there are three important values in our state government that, sadly, have become acceptable in our legislative and executive branches.
First, it is OK to pay kickbacks to a losing bidder from a contingency fund that is subsidized by taxpayer money. Second, it's OK for legislators to govern behind closed doors and be secretive of their activities. Third, it's OK to neglect Utah's children and not properly fund public education.
Hopefully on Election Day, we can eliminate these accepted values and elect a government for the people.
