ANAHEIM, Calif. — For decades, the Utah Jazz have been stereotyped as a slow-moving, methodical team that took its time to get things done on offense.

That hasn't always been true, of course.

Over the years, whether it was John Stockton or Deron Williams running the show, the Jazz have been an excellent transition team.

Picking up where he left off last season, coach Tyrone Corbin is all for getting the Jazz into a get-up-and-go mode once again.

Speeding up the game continues to be a preseason theme for Utah.

"We just want to increase our pace a little bit this year," Corbin said. "I think with the growth of our young guys, Alec (Burks) and Gordon (Hayward) and with the addition of Mo (Williams), Randy (Foye) and Marvin (Williams) in the open court, we can advance the ball a little bit more, be able to do something earlier there."

Picking up the pace can help the guards and wings, but it will also be advantageous for post players Al Jefferson, Paul Millsap et al. If they can post up before the defense sets up, Corbin believes it bodes well for Utah's scoring opportunities even if fast-break layups aren't produced. Meaning, he wants his bigs to rebound the ball, dish it and get downcourt instead of loafing.

"That helps create the pace," Corbin said. "We want to make sure it's within the way we want to play and making the right plays once you get it down the floor."

That's not to say the Jazz are going to become a Don Nelson run-and-gun-like squad.

"We don't want to be a free-playing team where we're just going out there and jacking shots early," Corbin said. "We want to play within a rhythm that's favorable to us."

NEW POINT?: Big man Derrick Favors spent part of Monday's practice working on his dribbling skills with point guards Mo Williams and Chris Quinn. Former Ute guard Johnnie Bryant, the Jazz's new player development assistant, led the drill in which the three players slapped a hand against the wall after quickly dribbling the ball between their legs.

Favors has recently shown he can handle the ball in the open court, having dribbled down court a couple of times. But, based on his skills with this drill, don't expect him to dribble between his legs anytime soon.

"They all want to expand their game in some kind of way," Corbin said. "Hopefully, it will help in the post."

Smiling, Corbin came to Favors' defense about him bringing the ball up the court on occasion this preseason.

"He didn't lose the ball," he said.

The coach, however, chuckled when informed that Favors was losing the ball against the wall in practice.

NOTES: Corbin on shot distribution up to this point in the preseason: "It's exhibition season. It's early. … Guys aren't playing regular minutes." … After tonight's rematch with the Lakers at the Honda Center, Utah returns to the Staples Center on Wednesday against the Clippers. … Both Mo Williams and Randy Foye played for that L.A. team last season.
