MOAB — An Australian BASE jumper who got snagged on a Moab canyon wall was rescued by friends Wednesday afternoon.
Grand County Sheriff Steven White said the man's parachute got caught during a jump about 3:30 p.m., leaving him hanging 250 above the ground. Officers got a call from the man's friends, alerting them to his situation.
Because there is not road access to the canyon, crews from Grand County Search and Rescue and the National Park Service set out on foot to try to reach the stranded man, White said.
When they arrived, they found that the man's friends had rappelled down to where he was caught, freed him and lowered him to the ground.
A Department of Public Safety helicopter that had been deployed from Salt Lake City to assist in the rescue transported the man to Moab Regional Hospital, White said. The BASE jumper sustained minor injuries to his feet.
