Former LDS Historic Sites Director Honored by History Association
SALT LAKE CITY — Donald L. Enders received the Association of State and Local History's Award of Merit at the group's recent meeting for his work in researching and restoring sites important to the history and development of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, according to a news release.
A graduate of Brigham Young University with multiple degrees, Enders has a bachelor's in archaeology and history, a master's of history and a master's of library science. He is also the recipient of the Leonard Arrington Award for lifetime service to Mormon History and a special citation from the Mormon History Association.
His work began at Historic Nauvoo as an excavation archeologist. From Palmyra, N.Y., to Southern Utah, Enders has worked on the restoration of nearly every historic site project the church has sponsored in the last 40 years. He considers the most rewarding part of his work to be the sense that he and his associates have been entrusted to develop, reconstruct and interpret places where sacred events took place.
Enders worked with the LDS Church's historic sites program for 47 years. After his retirement earlier this year, he signed up as a volunteer missionary with his wife, Loretta, in order to continue to make a contribution in the field.
