BEREA, Ohio — Browns offensive coordinator Brad Childress had never heard of rookie Josh Gordon when Cleveland selected the wide receiver in the second round of the NFL's supplemental draft.
Childress knows Gordon now. With three touchdown receptions in his past two games, the 21-year-old Gordon is developing into a playmaker for the Browns, who have been craving a game-changing No. 1 wide receiver for several seasons. It's taken a little while, but Gordon, who came to the pros with a checkered past after some off-field problems at Baylor, is beginning to blossom.
He's averaging 22.8 yards per reception, and after 62- and 71-yard TD catches the past two weeks, Gordon is making defenses honor Cleveland's deep passing game.
Browns coach Pat Shurmur says Gordon's "light is going on" and he's making strides on and off the field.
