MAGNA — Crews were working Thursday to determine the cause of a two-alarm house at 2752 S. 9000 West.
Unified Fire Capt. Cliff Burningham said the fire started in the attic of the small single-family dwelling, consuming the old wood shake shingles that were still in place below a layer of asphalt shingles.
Firefighters arrived at the scene about 10 a.m. and found smoke and flames coming through the front of the home. No one was inside the house, and the fire was under control within 20 minutes, Burningham said.
Crews fought the fire from above and below after searching the house, then monitored the structure to take care of remaining hotspots, Burningham said.
Gilbert Lujan, who witnessed the fire, said he heard a popping sound as he approached the house in his car, then saw flames shooting out the windows.
Crews were working to locate residents to further investigate the cause of the fire, Burningham said.
