Walter Pierce1948 ~ 2012In the world of plants, the cosmos thrives in adverse conditions, and blossoms into the most beautiful flower in the garden. This was our Walt. He left us on October 17, 2012. He was born on October 22, 1948, in Somerville, MA. His family, ever in search of greener pastures, made their way to Nevada, then settled in Utah. He was a man of humble beginnings, whose mischief and curiosity at an early age garnered him great experiences, a few tight spots, and a delight in learning new things every day. Walt was employed by SLC Corporation for 38 years, working up the ranks in Facilities Services. His crowning career achievement was refurbishing the bell tower clock in the Salt Lake City-County Building, which he completed before retiring in 2010. This was a particularly significant accomplishment for him as he married his best friend in the bell tower in 1976.He was a self-made man who lived hard, loved fiercely, and was deeply appreciated by everyone he encountered. Those fortunate enough to know Walt are familiar with his zest for puttering and projects, his charm, and his many significant accomplishments in life. He was particularly pleased with his relationships with his adult children, always remarking on how happy he was that they liked to spend time with him. He is survived by his wife Kris, son Andrew (Aretha), daughter Katie (Paul) Bushman, sons Walter Jr. and Adam, sisters Ethel and Alice, brother Charles, numerous nieces and nephews, and an abundance of friends and acquaintances from all walks of life. A celebration of Walt's life will be held on his 64th birthday, Monday, October 22nd, at Anna's Restaurant, 4700 South 900 East, Murray, from 6-8 p.m. Please come and bring a story to share about this wonderful man. If you have questions call Katie at (801) 833-8861."Those are a success who have lived well, laughed often and loved much; who have gained the respect of intelligent people and the love of children; who have filled their niche and accomplished their tasks; who leave the world better than they found it, whether by a perfect poem or a rescued soul; who never lacked appreciation of the earth's beauty or failed to express it; who looked for the best in others and gave the best they had." Emerson. This, too, was our Walt.In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Walt's name to the American Lung Association.
