Rulon W. Myers1921 ~ 2012Rulon W. Myers (91) was released from this mortal existence to return to his heavenly home on Sunday October 7th, after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Rulon was born in Provo, Utah on July 19, 1921. He was the son of George Wesley Myers and Edna Florence Park. He graduated from Provo High School and then attended BYU. He graduated with a degree in Accounting and was a member of the Golden Gloves Boxing Team. Rulon served in the United States Army during WWII. After his service he returned to Provo and married Erma McGuire on July 30, 1947 in the Logan Temple. Erma and Rulon were blessed with 6 children. Rulon was a State Farm Insurance agent in Provo for almost 45 years. At one time he was 12th in the nation in auto insurance sales for his company. In July 1956, Rulon and Erma were co-winners of the contest by Provo City to name the 4th of July celebration by choosing the title "Freedom Festival". Rulon and his family have attended every Freedom Festival since its inception. The family now has a tradition of gathering together for a reunion every year on the 4th of July. Rulon and Erma were able to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with their family in 1997. They were together for another 9 years until April 2006 when Erma, his wife and sweetheart, passed away.Rulon was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and attended the Provo II, Pioneer II and Pleasant View II Wards. He held many callings such as Ward Clerk and Home Teacher but his favorite calling was serving as a Scout Leader and being with the youth. He loved being outdoors and he participated in many sports. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, tennis and water skiing. He competed in downhill snow skiing and continued to ski until 2010 when he was 89 years old! Rulon loved to go hiking with his dog Bo, which he continued to do until just a few months ago. Rulon was a true blue BYU Cougar fan and held season football and basketball tickets for many years. He also enjoyed watching the Cougars play baseball and volleyball. Rulon was a long-time member of the Sertoma Club (SERvice TO MAnkind). He was also more recently active in the Golden Kiwanis Club. Most of all, Rulon loved helping others. If anyone needed a tool or help in fixing something, Rulon offered to help. He always had a garden and gave away much more of his harvest than he kept. He will be remembered for his kindness and generosity and also his winning smile.Rulon was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Erma, also a brother, Glade, and sisters Ethelyn Pratt and Maurine Stapley. Rulon is survived by two sisters, Edna Nelson (Provo, UT) and Diane Backus (Salem, UT) and his 6 children: Brenda (Clark Crookston) Orem, UT, Marian, (Ron Fraser) Mapleton, UT, George Myers (Margaret) Campbell, CA, JoAnne (Allen Swindler) Provo, UT, Carolyn (Michael Folsom) Dallas, TX, and Peggy Myers Kirkham, Lehi, UT. Also 27 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.The funeral will be held on Saturday, October 27th, Pleasant View II Ward Chapel (650 E. Stadium Ave., Provo) There will be a viewing from 1:00-2:00 pm and the funeral will start at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers Rulon requested that donations be made to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Humanitarian Aid fund.
