PROVO — Running back Jamaal Williams scored two rushing touchdowns and the BYU offense scored on each of its first three possessions to lead the Cougars to a big halftime lead over the Idaho Vandals, 42-7.
The Cougars rolled up 367 yards of total offense and the defense forced three turnovers, including a recovered fumble for a touchdown, as the Vandals looked totally overmatched on a frigid night at LaVell Edwards Stadium.
BYU quarterback Riley Nelson had 193 yards passing and three touchdowns, all to receiver Cody Hoffman, who tallied eight catches and 92 yards.
Y. kicker Justin Sorensen shanked a field-goal attempt near the end of the first half after a poor snap and hold, but Idaho fumbled on the next play. BYU elected to go for it on fourth down a few seconds later, with Nelson picking a first down on the ground, but Hoffman dropped a pass in the end zone on the next play to end the half.
