SALT LAKE CITY — Gov. Gary Herbert and the Utah Department of Natural Resources have announced Greg Sheehan as the new director of the Division of Wildlife Resources.

Sheehan, a department employee with 20 years of experience, has been the DWR’s administrative services chief since 2002. Sheehan will replace Jim Karpowitz, who has led the division since 2005 and is retiring on Dec. 1.

“I have truly valued Greg’s opinions and insights on issues we’ve faced through the years,” said Karpowitz. “He has a really good plan to move the division into new areas and directions.”

The DWR said Sheehan has played a role in many of the agency's initiatives, including the Watershed Restoration Initiative and boosting fish hatchery production.

Sheehan, a Layton resident, says he looks forward to working with the public.

“I grew up in Utah and enjoy hunting, fishing, wildlife viewing and photography,” said Sheehan. “I am committed to working with our dedicated employees and conservation partners to create more wildlife opportunity in Utah.”
