LAIE, Hawaii — Five Red Storm players scored in double figures to lead the Dixie State women's basketball team to a 89-72 win over BYU-Hawaii on Saturday night at the Cannon Activities Center.
Becca Thomas led the way by earning her third double-double of the season, scoring 20 points with 13 rebounds, including seven on the offensive side. Thomas scored 19 of her 20 points in the second half.
"Becca Thomas dominated in the paint and really found her groove in the second half," Dixie State coach Angie Kristensen said.
The Red Storm needed a comeback after trailing 36-35 at the half, and that's how they responded. With the score tied at 50 with 15:21 left, DSC went on a 13-3 run to build a 10-point lead and the Storm never looked back. Prior to that run, the game featured 12 ties and 20 lead changes.
Sheila Adams hit five 3-pointers on her way to 17 points and Gabriella Rodriguez hit three more shots from behind the arc to finish with 13 points. Both LaBrea Walker and Erica Hayes each scored 15 points for Dixie State.
"I thought our second half was amazing. Gabby and LaBrea gave me unbelievable minutes of the bench," added Coach Kristensen.
The Seasiders got a strong performance from Shayla Washington, who scored a game-high 23 points and had eight rebounds. Brianna Jessop added 12 points and Danna Lynn Hooper chipped in with 16 for BYU-Hawaii.
Dixie State connected on 11-of-18 shots from 3-point range, which was a school-record 61.1 percent. The Red Storm finished by shooting 45.7 percent from the field.
"Tonight was a a complete team effort and I am proud of them," Coach Kristensen said.
Winning for the fourth straight time, DSC improves to 14-5 overall and 9-2 in the PacWest. BYU-Hawaii drops to 3-15 overall and 2-8 in league play.
The Red Storm remain tied atop the PacWest standings and will prepare for a tough matchup on Monday night against Hawaii Pacific. Tip off is scheduled for 8 p.m. Mountain time.
