Helen LaRae Birch Halander1932 ~ 2012Helen LaRae Birch Halander, 80, died March 5, 2012 peacefully in her home in Salt Lake City due to causes incident to age. She was born February 28, 1932, in Eureka, Utah, the daughter of Emron M. and Helen L. (Gear) Birch. Helen graduated from East High School, class of 1948, at the age of 16. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1952 from the University of Utah, where she was a member of the Tri Delta sorority. Helen began her career as a teacher at the age of 20, teaching in Oregon and California for several years before returning home to start a family and to teach in Utah, where she was especially fond of her teaching family at Cottonwood Elementary School in Holladay. Helen married John A. ("Jack") Halander on March 1, 1960 in Fullerton, Californiathey recently celebrated 52 years of marriage. She was loved and respected by her students, and retired after 44 years of teaching. She spent the next 15 years as a volunteer at St. Mark's Hospital. Helen was an avid reader, she loved to attend plays with her friends, and above all else she loved spending time with her family. Helen was a smart, determined, and caring woman who will be sorely missed by her family and friends. Helen is survived by her husband, Jack Halander; daughter Jennifer Karren (Corey); son Eric Halander (Pamela Stewart); sister Barbara Bradley (Dale); and grandchildren Rachel Anderson (Brent); Nicole Karren; Anna Karren; Kiley Halander; and McKenna Halander. She is preceded in death by her parents and sister, Marilyn Keller. A memorial service will be held at 6:00 p.m. Thursday, March 8, 2012, at Holladay Cottonwood Memorial Mortuary, 4670 South Highland Dr., Holladay, Utah.
