Closer Look: Quinn cuts inspire harsh union ads

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — A major Illinois union is running ads that accuse Gov. Pat Quinn of favoring corporations over people and ignoring the needs of people with developmental disabilities.

The facts are more complicated than the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees acknowledges in its ads.

Quinn does want to cut more than 2,500 government jobs just months after backing corporate tax relief to protect thousands of jobs. But the government cuts will help balance the budget, which most people believe is critical to the state's health.

Two institutions for the mentally disabled would close. The union says Quinn is ignoring families who oppose the idea.

But most advocates support a switch to community care. And the administration says people can move to other institutions if they want.
