NY group wins OK to organize PTA for gay students

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. — A New York group has won approval to organize what would be the only Parent Teacher Association unit in the country currently dedicated to the needs of gay and lesbian youths.

The news was confirmed Thursday by David Kilmnick. He's executive director of the Long Island GLBT Services Network.

Kilmnick says representatives of the state and national PTA will present organizers of the newly formed regional chapter with their charter in Garden City next week.

An official with the national PTA says a Washington group formed a gay parent-teacher-student association in Puget Sound in 1999, but it later disbanded.

Kilmnick says anyone is welcome to join the new group.

The group will advocate for stronger anti-bullying measures. It also will seek to add contributions of gays to school curriculums.
