MCHENRY, Ill. — A fire has swept through a barn in northern Illinois, killing at least seven horses and destroying the building.
Several people ran through the burning stable in McHenry County to free some of the horses. Firefighters from 20 departments responded to the blaze, which started around 5 p.m. Wednesday.
Battalion Chief Mike Majercik of the McHenry Township Fire Protection District says at least seven horses are dead and three are missing.
Thirty-one horses were kept in the barn at the Black Tie Stable, which also has an arena.
Majercik says a cause hasn't been determined but investigators are focusing on a nearby controlled burn that took place Wednesday. They're also looking at a barbecue near the area where the fire started.
