High school track: Uintah sweeps its own invitational

VERNAL — The host school had a lot to celebrate after running over the competition on Friday at the Uintah Invitational. Both the boys and girls track squads represented the Utes outstandingly, with Carbon trailing for second place.

Caleb Birchell collected multiple wins for Uintah (shot put and discus), and as a team the Utes won the sprint medley relay and 4x400-meter competitions.

For the Dinos, Dalton Nelson and Tyler Johnson notched top finishes in five combined competitions: 100 meters, 200 meters, 110 hurdles, 300 hurdles and long jump. Garrett Marsing had an impressive afternoon for Carbon by picking up first-place finishes in the 800-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter competitions.

On the girls side, Uintah dominated to finish 203 points ahead of Carbon. The Utes swept the team competitions (4x100, 4x400 and sprint medley relay), and were led by Betty Orr and Harley Murray. Both Orr and Murray each placed first in a pair of competitions (100 meters, 400 meters, 100- and 300-meter hurdles).

Ashley Raymond and Emily Catron helped Manila get a couple of first-place finishes in the discus and javelin competitions.
