College roundup: Cal shuts out Utah

BERKELEY, Calif. — The Utah baseball team struggled on offense in a 9-0 loss to California on Saturday afternoon with just five hits in the contest.

Starter Brock Duke (2-2) threw 52?3 innings for the Utes (10-27, 5-12), allowing seven runs (just three earned) on eight hits.

UVU BASEBALL: At Orem, the Wolverines (26-11, 12-0 GWC) extended their school-record win streak to 19 games with a 13-3 win over Texas-Pan American.

SUU BASEBALL: At Cedar City, T-Bird starter Kelsey Outram cruised through the first eight innings against IPFW as SUU (13-25, 7-4) earned an 8-2 win.

DIXIE STATE BASEBALL: At St. George, behind a season-high eight strikeouts, Mike Dedrick (5-3) tossed seven shutout innings in a 13-0 win over California Baptist in Game 1, but the Lancers rebounded to win the series finale 8-5.

SLCC BASEBALL: At Taylorsville, the seventh-ranked Bruins (34-6, 25-4) split a doubleheader with Southern Idaho, dropping Game 1 8-5 and winning Game 2 10-0. The loss broke Salt Lake's 14-game winning streak at home.

UTAH SOFTBALL: At Los Angeles, Katelyn Elliott started an 8-1 rally for the Utes 8-1 with a three-run home run in the top of the fifth, but Utah (23-20, 0-14 Pac-12) fell to UCLA, 11-8.

Elliott hit 2-for-4 at the plate, including her fifth home run of the season, to go with three RBIs to push her season total to 17.

BYU SOFTBALL: At Ruston, La., the Cougars (30-13, 9-4 WAC) took their series against Louisiana Tech 2-1 after losing 6-4 in Game 1 and winning 5-1 in Game 2.

USU SOFTBALL: At Logan, the Aggies (15-30, 3-10 WAC) rallied twice in its series finale against San Jose State (25-21, 8-5) to defeat the Spartans, 6-4. USU put together 10 hits and Christine Thomsen had a perfect 4-for-4 day at the plate.

UVU, WEBER STATE SOFTBALL: At Orem, Utah Valley University coach Todd Fairbourne picked up his 400th career win with an epic 5-4, 12-inning victory. The Wolverines (27-19-1, 8-8 PCSC) also won a 5-2 decision on the day but UVU couldn't pull out all three games as it dropped a 4-3 contest to the Wildcats (21-26, 10-6 PCSC), thanks to six Wolverine errors.

SUU SOFTBALL: At Cedar City, the Thunderbirds (28-19, 14-7) completed a Summit League sweep of South Dakota State (10-25-1, 4-14) with a 7-0 victory.

DIXIE STATE SOFTBALL: At St. George, the Red Storm brought their winning streak to 12 games as they swept BYU-Hawaii 6-1 and 9-0.

BYU TENNIS: At Provo, the No. 52 BYU men's tennis team gave No. 7 Pepperdine all it could handle, but fell 6-1.

In the final regular season match for the women's team, the Cougars fell to No. 34 Pepperdine, 7-0.

UTAH TENNIS: At Salt Lake City, the 38th-ranked Utah women's tennis team (11-10, 3-7 Pac-12) blanked Colorado (7-14, 0-10) 7-0.

The men's tennis team (12-11, 1-6 Pac-12) netted its first conference victory against Arizona (5-17, 0-7). Utah managed to clinch the doubles point and four singles victories for the 5-2 road win.

UTAH STATE TENNIS: At Reno, Nev., to close the regular season, the Utah State women's tennis team (10-9, 2-2) came away from Western Athletic Conference rival Nevada (6-9, 0-3) with another win, edging the Wolf Pack 4-3.

DIXIE STATE TENNIS: At San Rafael, Calif., the 7th-seeded Red Storm women's tennis team fell in the PacWest's seventh-place match as 8th-seed Dominican rallied from a 2-1 doubles deficit to win 5-4.

USU TRACK: At Logan, Utah State's men and women's track and field teams won 16 events as part of 40 top-three finishes at the Mark Faldmo Invitational.
