Idling police cars

I enjoyed watching some of the runners participate in the Salt Lake Marathon last week. As I walked up and down 6200 South, I noticed several marked and unmarked police cars. I counted eight cars that were stationed at various points along the road.

All but one was left idling with the officer standing near or sitting on the front end of the car. I mentioned to one officer that he was the only one with his car turned off. He told me there is no reason to leave the car running.

With gas as high as it is, and knowing that my taxes are being used to help pay for the fuel, I was not happy to witness such waste. I appreciate the protection of police officers, but they should consider turning off the car when possible.
