LIBERTY PARK — Friday was full of surprises in the 5A boys state tennis championship, with defending champions Brighton advancing in four of the brackets. Viewmont and Davis also took four teams into semifinal play, with the Vikings' Sam Tullis knocking out the Bengals' Cody Crandall in first singles.

"I never really had control because it was a battle the whole way through," admitted the sophomore.

"I just had to kind of work with it, and take what I can get."

Tullis will meet Lone Peak senior Scott Bohne, who is 12-0 this season, in semifinal action Saturday morning.

Davis managed to earn four berths in semifinal play, but it didn't come easy. Brighton Wells outplayed Nick Olsen from Pleasant Grove in a 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 grind in third singles, while both of the Darts doubles squads had to overcome split sets as well to advance. Davis will have the tall task of trying to knock off Brighton Saturday morning in three separate brackets. The lone exception is senior Spencer Hafen, who will be up against Cottonwood junior Zeke Richards in first singles.

Viewmont head coach Mark Burningham was all smiles after watching his team finish strong on Day One, and understands Day Two is where it really counts.

"I'm excited for the wins, we've got four out of the five in round three so that's always a good sign," said Burningham.

The Vikings nearly sent all five squads into semifinal play, but the Alta duo of Jordan Ayre and Wyatt Zagoric-Marks knocked off Brad Hintze and Max Fillmore with a 6-2, 7-6 (7) victory in second doubles.

"They listened to us, and made the adjustments they needed to in that second set so it's just tough when a point or two makes a difference there at the end," acknowledged Burningham.

The Hawks squad faces off with Bingham contenders Spencer Eyring and Jack Aubrey, who are the lone team representing the Miners in this year's tournament.

Viewmont freshman Jacob Tullis punched his ticket to the semifinals in second singles, where the underclassmen faces off with Conner Pulsipher from Alta who survived a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory over Lone Peak junior Blair Robbins.

Parker Howell from Riverton will have his hands full Saturday morning, when the junior is paired with Brighton senior Troy Benson in the top of second singles.

Viewmont was last year's runner-up, and coach Burningham knows his boys want to win. It's not far out of reach, given that the Vikings wouldn't have to meet Brighton until the finals should they both advance.

"There are a couple ways to look at it," said the coach.

"Last year we had everyone through the first and second rounds and met Brighton head to head in the third round and lost every match, but we still had enough points for second place which was kind of amazing."

Semifinal play will be in full swing at 9 a.m. at the Liberty Park tennis courts.
