SALT LAKE CITY — The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim announced that Tyrone Boykin has been named interim hitting coach for the Salt Lake Bees. Boykin takes over for the departing Jim Eppard who was named Angels hitting coach yesterday. Eppard was in his 10th season as Bees hitting coach.
Boykin joins the Bees from his most recent position as the Angels roving outfield, baserunning and bunting instructor. From 2007-11, Boykin served as manager of the Tempe Angels, the Angels rookie level affiliate in the Arizona Summer League. He has also made managerial stints with Double-A Arkansas (2003-04, 2006), Single-A Rancho Cucamonga (2005) and Single-A Cedar Rapids (2001-02). In addition, Boykin served as hitting coach at Arkansas in 2002 and at Cedar Rapids from 1998-2000.
A native of Casey, S.C., Boykin played professionally in the Angels organization from 1991-96 after signing with the club as a free agent following his collegiate career at Jacksonville University in 1991. Boykin, his wife, Sharon, and two sons reside in Phoenix, Ariz.
The Salt Lake Bees begin an eight-game road trip tomorrow against the Iowa Cubs at 5:35 p.m.
