First, kudos to Deseret News/KSL for volunteering to sponsor a debate between Sen. Orrin Hatch and his challenger, former state Sen. Dan Liljenquist. Hopefully some other capable organizations will step up to the plate and make the same offer. It will take more than one debate to allow Utah voters to sift through all the issues and make an informed decision.
Second, there are some who will say that this decision by the Deseret News/KSL is showing "favor" for one candidate over the other. In my view, this is not about Hatch or Liljenquist — it is about the citizens of Utah, whom the candidates will represent. The voters of this state deserve as much unfiltered information as they can get in order to make their decision on June 26. Let the debates begin.
