SALT LAKE CITY — Mother Nature was in attendance at Day 1 of the 4A boys state tennis tournament, and forced the participants indoors rather than the Liberty Park tennis courts as scheduled. All singles matches were moved to the George S. Eccles tennis courts, where Bonneville and Timpview had all of their players advance to the semifinals.

Timpview senior Jon Pearce continued his dominance in 4A tennis with an impressive win over Logan junior Andrew Hugie in quarterfinal action of first singles. Pearce faces Highland standout Jihoon Noh, a junior for the Rams who came up just short in last year's tournament.

Parker Jones from Bonneville bested Kevin Rose of Maple Mountain to advance, and despite the 6-2, 6-3 final score Jones nearly saw a split set after Rose jumped out to the early lead in the second set. Michael Mann will represent Hillcrest in the first singles semifinal showdown after defeating Springville's Ben Spencer 6-2, 6-1.

In second singles, Matthew Pearce cruised past his competitors into the semifinals and will be up against Sky View freshman Austin Jeppson. The Bobcats' lone semifinalist, Jeppson got the better of Highland senior Howard Cooke in a narrow 7-6 (5), 7-5 victory.

"The first set I just played really well, and it was close the whole match," said an ecstatic Jeppson while adding, "but in that last game when I was up and had two match points I felt like I knew I was going to win."

Mitchell John will play the lone wolf for Mountain Crest after defeating Zach Nemelka of Springville 6-4, 6-2. The Lakers' Jay Walter managed to slip by Maple Mountain star McKay Luu in a 7-5, 6-1 slugfest that Walter took control of in the second set and never relinquished.

Tyler Heaton completed Bonneville's sweep of singles play with a 6-0, 6-4 decision over Chris Wiscombe of Maple Mountain in quarterfinal action. East junior Steiner Paulsen will meet Heaton in semifinal action of third singles after surviving a three-set 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 match versus Olympus standout Adam Ott in the final singles match of the day.

On the other side of the third singles bracket, Paul Monson also completed Timpviews' sweep in singles action with a pair of shutout victories on Day 1.

Michael Duke will represent Bountiful in the semifinal showdown against Monson after a 6-1, 6-1 sweep over Keegan Call of Herriman.

In doubles action, Hunter Ballam and Jordan Larsen of Logan swept the Timpanogos duo of Nick Mayberry and Enrique Fernandez 6-0, 6-0 in their first round match. Three of the eight first round matches went into three-set matches, with Matt Bladen and Nathan Duncan of Sky View, Luke Dance and Ben Elgan from Mountain Crest and Herriman brothers Tyler Rindlisbacher and Scott Rindlisbacher all advancing into the quarterfinals.

Second doubles managed to get both the quarterfinals and first round completed after the storm passed and the tennis courts were made playable. Timpview duo Jacob Jensen and Josh Harrison survived a pair of three-set matches to earn a berth in the semifinals where they meet Highland seniors Julian Wise and Thomas Dale first thing Saturday morning. Ethan Johnson and Landon Oswald were nearly forced into a third set match in their quarterfinal match against Scott Hamilton and Tyler Bell from Olympus, but survived to take on East juniors Adam Williams and Sam Rasmussen at 9 a.m. sharp.
