SALT LAKE CITY — The Timpview boys tennis team clinched its ninth team title in 10 years, capping off two days of impressive tennis with a perfect score of 30 points.
"One team, one journey, one goal," said Timpview head coach Rob Sperry after claiming a second consecutive state title.
First singles champion Jon Pearce picked up his third consecutive individual title, besting Hillcrest senior Michael Mann in a two-set 6-0, 6-2 win.
"It feels good to go out with a win, and I think there are only a few people who have won three times at first singles so it feels good obviously," said Pearce, who will continue to better his tennis game down the road at BYU after graduation.
Highland junior Jihoon Noh saw defeat at the hands of Pearce in semifinal action, and Parker Jones from Bonneville couldn't pick up the second set in a 6-1, 7-5 loss in first singles.
Matthew Pearce picked up his second consecutive state title for Timpview, battling fellow junior Jay Walter of Bonneville in a 6-4, 6-2 match that could have gone to either opponent. The younger Pearce had given up just a single game through three rounds of the tournament, and had to rally through a handful of opportunities that the Lakers' lone contender in championship play made use of in the second victory of the day for Timpview.
Paul Monson lit up the third singles competition through all five rounds of the tournament for the Thunderbirds, conceding just three games through day two of the 4A tournament. Steiner Paulsen helped represent East in the championship round of the tournament, along with second doubles duo Adam Williams and Sam Rasmussen who survived a 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 semifinal match to advance.
Brett Jaynes and Rendell Burghart sealed the Timpview sweep with a straight set victory over Logan juniors Hunter Ballam and Jordan Larsen in the days final match. Sperry said the dynamic duo are the best team since his involvement with the high school began in 1977.
"Our number one rule is to have fun, and we want our kids to play with that mentality in every match."
