VERNAL — A Uintah County boy is expected to recover from injuries he received when his mother accidentally ran over him in the driveway of their home.
The accident happened Saturday about 9:20 p.m. at 1760 S. Vernal Ave., according to Uintah County Undersheriff John Laursen. Responding deputies found paramedics working on the 4-year-old boy inside the home when they arrived.
The boy's mother told deputies her son and other children had been playing in front of the house and she decided to move the family's van so she could keep a better eye on them.
The woman said she was backing the van up when it felt like she hit something. She said she believed it was the family cat. Other adults at the home screamed at the woman to stop, which was when she learned she'd run over her son, Laursen said.
Deputies later determined that the boy was hiding under the van at the time his mother began moving the vehicle, which prevented her from seeing him.
The boy suffered a skull fracture and a broken femur. He was taken to Ashley Regional Medical Center and then flown by helicopter to Primary Children's Medical Center.
Bonnie Midget, spokeswoman for Primary Children's, said Monday that she could not release the boy's condition, per his parents' request.
The boy should recover from his injuries, Laursen said. No charges are expected to be filed, he said.
