SALT LAKE CITY — Firefighters responded to a fire that completely destroyed a home and left six people homeless Monday night.

When firefighters entered the house to extinguish the flames, they encountered makeshift walls and damaged floors that prevented them from staying inside, according to Jasen Asay, Salt Lake City Fire spokesman.

Close to 40 firefighters responded to the incident, which began around 6:30 p.m. One firefighter was transported to the hospital after suffering from exhaustion, Asay said. He is expected to make a full recovery.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. None of the residents were at home at the time of the fire and they are staying with friends or family for the night. The house was completely destroyed by the blaze.
