Garland Hummel1923 ~ 2012Garland A. Hummel passed away May 18, 2012 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was born in New Germany, Maryland to George and Emma Warnick Hummel on February 21, 1923. He was preceded by his elder brother Harry Wilmer and his mother and father, as well as his first child David Ralph Hummel. He graduated in 1939 from Grantsville High School in Grantsville, Maryland. On February 21, 1943 he married Miriam Marie Dietrich in Cumberland, Maryland. They moved to Baltimore, Maryland where both were employed at Glenn L. Martin Aircraft in Middle River, Maryland until he entered the U.S. Army in 1944. Garland served in the European Theater of World War II and was wounded in Germany. He spent over 2 years in military hospitals recovering from his battle wounds. He began his college education at Frostburg State Teachers College in Frostburg, Maryland. Upon completing his education he began working as a freelance draftsman. Garland then became employed by Hercules Powder Company at Allegheny Ballistics Laboratory in West Virginia. He was very involved in the Aerospace Industry for the rest of his career with Hercules Aerospace and Aviation. His career involved many contributions to NASA and the Department of Defense.In 1959 the family moved from Frostburg, Maryland to Holladay, Utah. He continued his work for Hercules at Bacchus Works in Magna, Utah. He and Miriam had three children David, Dennis and Patricia. He is survived by Dennis (Janet), Patricia, 3 grandchildren Garland Hummel, Devin Hummel and Andrea (Ken) Nelson. He also leaves behind two great-grandchildren Zac and Olivia Nelson.He will be interred in the Bittinger, Maryland cemetery, Bittinger, Maryland with his late wife Miriam.
