HIGHLAND — The City Council will decide Tuesday whether to raise property taxes by $900,000 to pay for road projects.

The property tax hike is included in the city's 2012-13 budget. As proposed, $700,000 would go toward road construction, and another $200,000 would be put toward road maintenance.

The increase would add roughly $140 per year to the property tax bill on a home valued at $200,000.

The city had planned to raise property taxes by $1 million, but City Council members have been working to find $100,000 cuts elsewhere in the budget. That money is proposed to go toward park construction.

The Highland City Council will meet in a work session to discuss the proposed property tax increase and additional budget cuts 6 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall, 5400 W. Civic Center Drive. A vote on the the budget, including the tax increase, is scheduled for 7 p.m.

If the tax increase is adopted as part of the budget, a truth-in-taxation hearing will be held in August.
