Legal experts say Orie could learn that cover-ups are often more damaging than the underlying crimes when she’s sentenced Monday, June 4, 2012, on charges she used her state-funded legislative staff to perform campaign work and covered up her misdeeds with forged documents.

PITTSBURGH — A judge has sentenced Republican state Sen. Jane Orie to 2-1/2 to 10 years in state prison.

The 50-year-old suburban Pittsburgh attorney was sentenced Monday on charges that she illegally used her legislative staff to do campaign work and then forged documents to cover that up.

Allegheny County Judge Jeffrey Manning ordered her to begin her sentence immediately and she was taken from the courtroom.

It was not yet known if Orie must pay up to $2 million in restitution, as well as legal fees spent on her behalf by the state GOP caucus.
