NEW YORK — The New York City building that was the birthplace of the iconic Oreo cookie a century ago is slated for an expansion, but many neighborhood residents oppose it.

Opponents say the two towers that developer Jamestown Properties wants to affix to the complex known as Chelsea Market would be eyesores and would increase congestion.

But the company says the complex must grow if it is to thrive.

Chelsea Market is home to the Food Network, Google and a tourist-friendly food mall. Shows like "Chopped" and "Food Network Stars" are shot there.

Jamestown's plan to mount a 250-foot box-like structure atop Chelsea Market's western section and a similar 150-foot structure on the eastern side is going through an approval process that will likely end with a City Council vote this year.
