SAN ANTONIO — U.S. Senate candidate and Texas Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst has made a hard appeal to veterans by suggesting his opponent can't claim to be a fighter because he has never served in the military.

Speaking with Gov. Rick Perry Monday at a Veterans of Foreign Wars post in San Antonio, Dewhurst said of former Texas Solicitor General Ted Cruz, "the louder you speak, probably, the less of a fighter you are."

Dewhurst served in the U.S. Air Force and in CIA and calls himself a fighter. Cruz is backed by the tea party and describes himself as a fighter for conservative values.

Dewhurst and Cruz square off Tuesday in a runoff election for the Republican nomination to replacing retiring Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison. The race appears too close to call.
