NEW DELHI — Stranded passengers, commuters on dark streets, people making food over campfires.

The massive electric grid collapse in India swept people back to the dark ages, creating scenes that evoke a time long ago. The cascading power outage cut power to 620 million people in the world's largest blackout before the lights started coming back on again.

While Indians were furious and embarrassed, many took the crisis in stride, inured by the constant — though far less widespread — outages triggered by the huge electricity deficit stymieing the development of this would-be Asian power.
