Don Spafford ManwaringJan. 14, 1931 ~ July 27, 2012Don passed away peacefully in the presence of family near Holladay, Utah, close to where he grew up as a boy ("a most wonderful place to be raised"). He died of complications due to kidney failure. The son of Paul Walker and Winniefred Spafford Manwaring - born in Salt Lake City. His father was an army officer, and the family moved often during World War II. Don eventually returned to Utah, graduating from East High in Salt Lake - and later from the University of Utah. Don was called to serve in the Spanish American Mission of the LDS church. That service was cut short because of the Korean War. Don made the military a career, retiring from the U.S. Army as a Lt. Colonel and a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Don played the piano and enjoyed singing. He performed with many choirs including the Jay Welch Chorale. He served as president of the Salt Lake Organ Club for seven years.Don married Shirley Adamson of Bountiful in the Salt Lake Temple on September 18, 1951. Their marriage and time together blessed them with seven wonderful sons - "The Magnificent Seven," as Don called them. They lived in Japan, Germany and various states. Activity in the LDS church was always a part of their life, providing many service opportunities. All seven boys filled honorable missions. Don passed away an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.Don is survived by Shirley, Richard (Melody Foulk), Craig (Kathy Whipple), Paul (Ruth Hanks), Brent (Paula Bratt), Stephen (Trudy Withers), Michael (Monica Harper), Jeffrey (Carol Jenkins), 38 grandchildren, and 25 great grandchildren, and his sister, Louise M. Busse of Brisbane, California. Don is pre-deceased by parents, sister - Darl M. Quayle, great-grandson - Jonathan, and granddaughter - Zion.A short funeral service will be held on Thursday, 2 p.m., August 2, 2012 at the Holladay-Cottonwood Memorial Mortuary, 4670 Highland Drive. There will be a viewing at 1 p.m.Interment will be at the Mt. Olympus Gardens section of the Holladay Memorial Park, 4900 Memory Lane, Holladay.
