BENSON, Utah — Officials are investigating a fire that destroyed about 1,500 tons of hay in Benson.

The fire started about 1 a.m. Friday. The Herald Journal reports the cause remains under investigation.

By Friday night the blaze was being treated as a controlled burn and had been turned over to the property owner for monitoring.

But fire officials say hay may continue to burn for a few days and residents may see smoke.

Firefighters worked for about six hours while nearby residents and farm hands used tractors to try to salvage what hay they good and push already-burning hay away from the barn where it was stored.
