Am I the only person on the face of the earth who thought the much-touted Olympic opening ceremony was a hodgepodge of pseudo-artistic nonsense? Yes, there were a couple of highlights, such as the James Bond/Queen Elizabeth skydiving entrance, Rowan Atkinson's brilliant performance as a keyboard player and the venerable Paul McCartney singing "Hey Jude" one more time in an attempt to set a record of his own.

But between the sheep, the smokestacks, the kids bouncing on beds, the aerial attack of Mary Poppins clones, a house on fire and everything else, the event was living proof that if you try to please everyone, you'll probably please no one. NBC's off-screen hosts from time to time would put in a word or two in a vain attempt to explain to a baffled audience what the scenes were trying to say, but they weren't very convincing. Yes, it's easy to be critical. But London made it too easy.
