CHENGDU, China — A Chinese court is issuing a 15-year prison term for the ex-police chief whose attempted asylum bid triggered China's messiest political scandal in decades.
The official Xinhua News Agency said the Intermediate People's Court in Chengdu ordered the jail term Monday for Wang Lijun after convicting him of defecting, abuse of power and other crimes.
The sentence is lighter than the 20 years in prison sentencing guidelines suggest. The reduction is for Wang's help in exposing the central element in the scandal — the murder of a British businessman by the wife of his former boss, Bo Xilai.
With Bo's wife and Wang both now sentenced, Chinese leaders are now expected to turn to announcing whether Bo will face criminal prosecution.
