MARIKANA, South Africa — News reports and photos undermine claims by striking miners that one of those shot on Aug. 16 by police in South Africa had been taken by police from his hospital bed and beaten to death. Mgcineni Noki apparently died in the fusillade of gunfire.

Photos from local newspapers and an interview with the dead man's brother indicate that Noki was immediately killed in the hail of police bullets. Protesting miners on Wednesday waved a photograph of Noki and claimed he'd only been wounded in the foot and was later beaten to to death.

Earlier reports carried by the Pretoria News show what appears to be Noki's corpse lying among other dead miners on Aug. 16. His brother is quoted as saying Noki's body was riddled with bullets.
