Geraldine Humphrey Smith1930 ~ 2012Geraldine Humphrey Smith, 82, our loving mother, grandmother, sister, wife, and friend, died on December 28, 2012, in Salt Lake City, Utah, of causes incident to age. Gerry was born on August 11, 1930, to Isaac Bailey and Twila Heiner Humphrey in Salt Lake City, Utah. She married Gordon Russell Smith on March 15, 1951. Gerry is survived by her three sons: Bradford Smith of Denver, CO; Craig (Teresa) Smith of Springville, UT; and Darrell (Shauna) Smith of Salt Lake City, UT; as well as 11 grandchildren: Kyra, Cameron, Jordan, Taylor, Jackson, Samantha, Caitlin, Madison Best (Josh), Dillon, Bailey, and Hannah; and two great grandchildren: K'dee Dalton and Bailee Best. Also survived by two sisters: Darlene Anderson of Lakewood, WA; and Twila (Sam) Isaacson of Salt Lake City, UT; and one brother: Donald Humphrey (Mary Jane) of Lincoln, NE. Preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Gordon "Gub" Smith, and two brothers, Ronald (infant) and Marlin Humphrey. Gerry attended Salt Lake schools: Hawthorne Elementary, Irving Junior High, and graduated from South High School in 1946, and the University of Utah in 1951. She and Gordon moved into a new house in the Canyon Rim neighborhood of Salt Lake City in 1953 where Gerry lived for 59 happy years. Gerry worked for many years as a librarian in the Salt Lake School District at Backman Elementary, Rose Park Elementary, and Hawthorne Elementarythe same school she attended as a youth. She and her husband had wonderful life-long friends, including many they met while attending the University of Utah together. Gerry's home was always a fun place to visit. Her friends and her sons' friends always felt welcome there. She was very supportive of and a great sounding board to her sons and grandchildren. She taught them the value of meaningful friendships, and the importance of being kind to everyone. Gerry loved summers, swimming with her family, flowers, decorating her home, the color purple, and how her beautiful glass ornaments glistened in the sun. Gerry was a long-time member and supporter of the Ladies' Literary Club of Salt Lake City. She enjoyed and supported the arts, and liked to travel, but most loved being with her husband and family. Gerry was a devoted daughter to her parents, a caring sister to her siblings, a loving and sensitive mother to her children, an involved and fun grandmother, and a loyal friend to her neighbors. She was a member of the LDS Church.Special thanks to the kind staff at Sunrise of Holladay and Inspiration Hospice Care.Funeral services will be held at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 Highland Drive, Salt Lake City, Utah, at 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 4, 2013. Friends may pay respects 60 minutes prior to the service. Interment will follow at the Heber City, Utah, cemetery.
