Given how guns tragically kill and maim so many of our children and adults today, our national legislators must produce solutions.

Since the Newtown children's massacre, numerous remedies have been advanced. No one measure will stem the increasing tide of violence that separates ours from essentially all other developed nations. Our representatives must do something while the tragedy crowds our thoughts in order to reduce the carnage. Inaction now will ensure that we don't begin to reduce the numbers of dead and injured.

Banning large-capacity magazines and non-military possession of assault rifles through legislation and initiating universal background checks are a realistic beginning. None are a threat to law-abiding citizens.
