Vernon Frederick Jorgensen1925 - 2013Vernon Frederick Jorgensen passed away on January 27, 2013. He was born on April 8, 1925 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Nels C. and Sarah F. Jorgensen. He graduated from West High School where he met Evelyn Plewe. They were married on September 22, 1947 in the Salt Lake Temple. Vernon graduated from the University of Utah, obtaining two masters degrees, and did further work towards a doctoral degree in Urban Planning.Vernon was employed by Salt Lake City serving 30 years as the director of the Planning and Zoning Department. He had a great impact on the early planned growth of Salt Lake City and assisted with many decisions which continue to shape the city today. After retirement, he volunteered at Bennion Elementary School assisting children individually to improve reading skills.Vernon was an active member of the LDS Church, having served as Bishop of the Belvedere 2nd Ward, a mission with his wife to the Salt Lake Inner City Mission, temple ordinance worker, and numerous callings to teach; with Primary being his favorite place to serve.Christmas was a special time for Dad. He will long be remembered for his large Christmas tree and decorations. During the summer, his yard was full of flowers which he freely shared with neighbors.He is survived by his wife, Evelyn: his children Dean & Bee Jorgensen, Neil & Deor Jorgensen, Douglas & Sharon Jorgensen, Ann & Greg Bowles, Julie & Jason Lewis, daughter- in-law Ginger Jorgensen, 24 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, Vernon F. Jr. and David M. Jorgensen and grandson, Richard Jorgensen.Funeral Services will be held Thursday, January 31, 2013 at 12:00 noon at the Monument Park 2nd Ward at 1005 South 20th East, Salt Lake City. A viewing will be held Wednesday, January 30 from 6-8 PM at the Larkin Sunset Lawn 2350 East 1300 South and Thursday at the ward from 10:30 to 11:30 AM prior to the funeral.The family expresses appreciation to all who have assisted Dad over the past several months; especially Nubia and Jill for their attention and care.
