Byron James Tempest1938 ~ 2012ST. GEORGE, UTAHByron James Tempest, 74, passed away Friday, December 28, 2012 at his home in St. George, Utah.Born October 19, 1938 in Murray, Utah, he was the third son of Henry Golden Tempest and Bertha Mae Minshew. After his mother's death when he was three, he was raised by his father's second wife, Irene Nelson, who had another son, Keith. Byron graduated from Olympus High School in 1957 and joined the U.S. Army Reserves. He served a mission for the LDS Church in the New England States Mission from 1958-60 and attended Brigham Young University.He married Beverly Kay Jackson May 18, 1963. They were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple. They raised five children in Sandy, Utah. He worked at Kennecott Copper for 37 years, retiring in 2001. After retiring, he lived in St. George during the winter to enjoy the warm weather and Fairview, Utah during the summer. Byron was a friend to all who met him and always enjoyed good humor.He enjoyed association with many lifelong friends. He loved to golf and watch sports especially BYU football and basketball. He was an avid Cougar sports fan.He served in church callings throughout his life including stake missionary, Seventy and High Priest. He loved the Lord with all his heart and touched the lives of many as he taught by knowledge and example. He was a great father and grandfather. He loved being with his children and grandchildren, sincerely loving and taking interest in each family member. All loved to be visited by him.He is survived by his wife, Beverly; children (and their spouses): Deborah (Mark), Katherine (Richard), David (RaChelle), Michelle (Chad) and Jennifer (Paul); 24 grandchildren; one great grandchild; brother, Keith (Diane); parents in law, Warren and Chelta.He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Golden Tempest, Bertha Mae Minshew and Irene Nelson; brothers, Blaine Tempest and Ray Tempest; and great granddaughter Trinady Baxter.A viewing will be held Wednesday, January 2, 2013 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Sunset LDS Chapel located at 82 N. Dixie Dr, St. George.A viewing will also be held Friday, January 4, 2013 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Jenkins Soffe Mortuary located at 1007 W South Jordan Pkwy, South Jordan. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 5 at 1:45 p.m. in the LDS chapel located at 13768 S 6400 W, Herriman. A viewing will be held prior to the funeral from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.Interment will be in the Herriman City Cemetery.On Christmas day (just three days prior to his death) Byron asked about having a sign made for his home which reads, "Wise men still seek Him."
