Reed Rogers HawkesJune 18, 1927 ~ Oct. 7, 2013Reed Rogers Hawkes, 86, beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, died Monday, October 7, 2013 in Salt Lake City. Reed was born June 18, 1927 to Anna Rebecca Rogers and William Hawkes, Jr., the ninth of their eleven children. The constant focus of Reed's life was to be faithful in all his family relationships and the covenants he made as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As a young man he developed a great desire to be a missionary. When World War II required a different duty, he served willingly in the U.S. Maritime Service and the Army but rejoiced when the war ended early enough for him to accept a call to the Northern States Mission. In 1950 Reed met his eternal companion, Beverly Andersen, at Brigham Young University and married her in the Logan Temple. Reed and Beverly made lifelong friends at Northwestern University in Chicago, where he completed dental school. Returning to the family homestead with the first two of their children, they set up Reed's dental practice in Preston, Idaho and brought three more children into the family. The children remember his appreciation of their Rogers family heritage with the legendary Welsh love of singing, as he loved to sing to the children in the rocking chair and on trips in the family car. He loved teaching his family and told memorable stories in countless Family Home Evenings. He shared his lifelong love of birdwatching with friends and family, amassing a list of over 500 species sighted; many of his family, including the great-grandchildren, now share his love of birds as creations of Heavenly Father. Reed's dental career eventually included moves with the Veterans Administration to Buffalo, Boise, Los Angeles, and Tacoma, with a post-retirement move to Utah. In these locations he cherished his relationships with the Latter-day Saints and his priesthood service roles, including home teacher, bishop, stake president, temple ordinance worker and sealer, and stake patriarch. From 1994 through 2008 Reed and Beverly lived in Payson and Provo; she lived her last four years with cancer and Reed lovingly cared for her as she had so faithfully supported him in his career and service. Following Beverly's death, Reed met and married Norma Elise Wadsworth, an ordinance worker in the Provo temple. As residents of Provo for nearly four years until his death, Reed and Norma enjoyed temple service and outdoor walks, and gathered whenever possible with the children and grandchildren from her large family and his. His years with Norma included many of his own health challenges, through which she cared for him every day with great love and devotion. Reed is survived by three of his ten siblings, George (Rosa Mae) Hawkes, Marilou Hawkes Moser, and Grant (Lenona) Hawkes, and by four children, Jonathan (Janis) Hawkes, Miriam (Blake) Boatright, Rachel Hawkes Hinkle, and Rebecca (Troy) Martin. He was preceded in death by his wife Beverly and their son Matthew, son-in-law Ivan Hinkle, and grandson Reed Boatright. Funeral services for Reed will be held on Saturday, October 12, at 11:00 a.m. in the Oak Hills Ward chapel, 1960 North 1500 East in Provo. Norma will be present with the family at a viewing preceding the funeral, 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. A viewing will also be held on Friday, October 11, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Berg Mortuary, 185 East Center Street, Provo. Interment, Orem Cemetery at 1520 North 800 East, Orem.
