CLINTON, Iowa – The Westminster College men’s soccer team couldn’t overcome a halftime deficit and lost 3-2 at fifth-ranked Ashford (Iowa) on Saturday afternoon at the AU Soccer Field.
Westminster (5-7) trailed 3-0 at halftime and was outshot 8-5 in the opening 45 minutes. Ashford (9-2-1) used first half goals by Daniel Dreier, Caio Ruiz and Murilo Ceruli during a 10 minute span to hold that halftime advantage.
The Griffins got on the board in the 83rd minute as Anthony Alcox finished a ball played by Trenton Petersen for his second goal of the season. Two minutes later, Petersen set up Warren Cook for a goal that got the Griffins within one with five minutes to play. The goal by Cook was the first of his career, while Petersen notched his first two career assists in the game.
Logan Butzier suffered the loss in goal and finished the game with five saves for Westminster.
The Griffins return to action Sunday when they visit Saint Ambrose. The game from the Davenport Soccer Complex begins at 11 a.m. MDT.
