SALT LAKE CITY — A man with a criminal record was arrested Monday after police say he tried to pass himself off as one of their own.

Wesley Earl Hansen, 44, was arrested for investigation of impersonating an officer and simple assault.

Hansen ordered a man to step out of a vehicle near 11 E. 1700 South, according to a Salt Lake County Jail report. The victim believed Hansen was a "bail or enforcement officer."

Hansen then assaulted the victim, the report states. A motive for the attack was not disclosed Tuesday.

When police arrived, Hansen told officers and witnesses that he "was working for numerous police and federal agencies," the report states.

Hansen's criminal history dates back more than 20 years, according to Utah state court records. In 2003 he pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled substance, a charge that was reduced from a felony to a misdemeanor. At that time, court records show that Hansen was head of security at a Salt Lake County strip club.

Most recently, he took a plea in abeyance to a charge of assault, a class B misdemeanor, in May.
