Evan Feinberg's column that appeared in the Deseret News on Sept. 29 titled "Opting out of Obamacare is a smart move for millennials" has an error in it.
Feinberg states, "Thankfully, millennials do have one remaining option: Opt out of Obamacare. This path allows them to pay a small penalty, which then frees them to purchase health insurance outside of the exchange system."
I've done a little research on the Affordable Care Act (a.k.a., Obamacare), and while he is correct that millennials (and everyone else, for that matter) can purchase health insurance outside the exchange system, he is wrong when he says that they will be assessed a fee if they purchase insurance outside of the exchange system. The fee is only assessed if a person doesn't purchase any health insurance at all. So if you don't care for the Health Insurance Marketplace, feel free to purchase insurance through some other method. It's only those who refuse to get insurance that need to worry about a fee.
