If you see a bunch of ghosts, goblins and Jane Fonda look-a-likes running through your neighborhood streets this weekend, there’s no need to be alarmed. Chances are they’re racers in the Running Scared race in Herriman.

“With all the candy kids and parents will be eating this Halloween, it's the perfect time to get out and do something healthy,” said race organizer Aly Brooks. “We wanted to host a fun, family-friendly event to promote fitness in the community.”

The race takes place in Herriman this Saturday, Oct. 26, beginning at 10 a.m. Racers in the 5K and 10K events will run laps around Tuscany Park.

The race revolves around a carnival-like atmosphere. “There’s free face painting, games, sign making and even cotton candy,” Brooks said. “It’s a lot of fun.”

“We hope people will come put their costumes to the test and have fun with us this weekend,” Brooks said. “It’s a good way to offset the calories we’ll be consuming over the next couple weeks.”

“This 5K was one of the highlights of my year last year,” said racer London Riding. “I dressed as Supergirl and felt like a rocking superhero standing on the podium with my medal."

Racers will be at the starting line dressed in full costume ready to race for the winner’s cash. “We do have a small cash prize for the winner and other prizes for best costume and best dancer,” Brooks said.

Families can run together or cheer on the racers as they cross the finish line. “I had a great time running with my family last year, and my husband even dressed up,” said Julie Gallegos, who volunteered at the race last year.
