We're used to being the favorite and yeah, it puts some pressure on you, but we've proven able to deal with that pressure. Our players are used to winning, but more importantly, know how to win. – Jerry Cowan, Duchesne head football coach

DUCHESNE — The Eagles, as expected, are flying high entering the 1A state playoffs and their matchup with Monument Valley in the first round. An undefeated regular season record on top of three straight state championships positions them as the unquestioned favorite.

It's a position Duchesne coach Jerry Cowan is OK with.

"We're used to being the favorite and yeah, it puts some pressure on you, but we've proven able to deal with that pressure," he said. "Our players are used to winning, but more importantly, know how to win."

Take for instance starting quarterback Trent Roberts, who has never lost a football game in his two years starting. Roberts provided 1,162 yards of total offense and 21 touchdowns on the year to lead the Eagles.

"He's a fine quarterback and a great leader for us," Cowan said. "We also have some very good running backs — especially Matt Muir, who is our offensive MVP."

Muir is one of the team's three leading running backs, second-leading receiver and star cornerback. He provided 851 total yards and eight touchdowns on the year.

The only area for concern for Duchesne is at line depth.

"We lost some key players late along our line and hopefully we can get them healthy," Cowan said. "We're going to rest some of them against Monument Valley and hopefully get them healthy for the rest of the playoffs."

Monument Valley enters the matchup with a 3-5 overall record and the overwhelming underdog.

"You can't take anyone lightly and we're not taking them lightly," Cowan said of his opponent. "They're a well-coached team and we'll have to be up for the game and play our best to win."
