SALT LAKE CITY — A man faces a felony assault charge for allegedly fighting with court security officers who asked him to remove a beanie and sunglasses in the federal courthouse Thursday.
George Aaron Powell argued with the officers outside a fourth-floor courtroom after they asked him to sit down and show them identification, according to a complaint in U.S. District Court.
Powell also pulled out a recording device with a microphone sewn into his jacket, the complaint says. He became angry when they told him recorders were not allowed in the courthouse, and he tried to barge into the courtroom, according to the complaint.
An FBI agent came out from the room to find Powell fighting with the officers, the complaint says. The agent put Powell on the ground and handcuffed him.
Powell faces one count of assaulting a federal officer. He remains in custody pending a detention hearing Tuesday.
