ZION NATIONAL PARK — Four artists from around the country were selected to serve in 2014 as Artists-in-Residence in Zion National Park. The artists were selected from a pool of more than 80 applicants.
From Feb. 3-March 4, the artist will be Rick Braveheart, photographer from Columbus, Ohio. The artist during April is Rachel Panitch, musician from Jamaica Plain, Mass. The artist during September is Lyn Hart, tapestry weaver from Tucson, Ariz. And Oct. 16-Nov. 14, the artist is Sara Tabbert, a printmaker from Fairbanks, Alaska.
Resident artists spend 30 days living in a historic cabin in the park. They explore and surround themselves in the sights, sounds, textures and wonders of the park to find inspiration for their work. Each artist conducts two public presentations on their work and residency experience. Date, time and location of these presentations will be announced closer to each artist’s residency.
The Artist-in-Residence program at Zion National Park began in the early 19th century with Hudson River School painters and transcendentalist writers like Thomas Cole and Henry David Thoreau. The work of some of these artists led to preservation legislation that created Yellowstone, Yosemite and Zion national parks.
