In my opinion, the information that marriage is a major factor in the poverty cycle overstates the case for marriage and hides the real causes of poverty. While I am a strong believer in the value of traditional marriage, I believe that the affluence of the parent(s) is much more the decider of poverty for the children.

Poverty is the byproduct of capitalism; if there are to be winners, there will also be losers. This is not to pick on capitalism; it is also true for just about everything we do.

If we want to eliminate poverty, and not the winners, we must ask the winners to give up a little bit of their winnings to eliminate the causes and symptoms of poverty. This would probably create a floor in the availability of food and other necessities of life, below which we would not let anybody go.
