Dr. Donald "Doc" Houston, MD1932 ~ 2013Cottonwood Heights, UtahOur loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and friend, Donald Houston, MD, 81, passed away on November 4, 2013 in Sandy, Utah. He was born on March 5, 1932 in Panguitch, Utah to John Steiner and Della Prince Houston. Don was raised in Panguitch, Utah and later graduated from the University of Utah School of Medicine in 1960. He was a Captain in the Air Force for 5 years, initially stationed at Lackland AFB, TX and later transferred to Clark AFB in the Philippines. In 1968 Don started his own practice in San Jose, California as a general surgeon. He was a member of the Flying Doctors, a volunteer group who would fly to Mexico, often in their own airplanes, to help those in rural areas with primary medical care. They also established a hospital for more involved care. He later moved to St. George and started up another practice. He served as Governing Board President for the Utah Health System Agency from 1981 through 1983. Don enjoyed spending time with his family. He married Carolyn Lytle in 1952, and they had 5 children and later divorced. He married Jill Dee Singer, and they had two children and later divorced. He married Marva Billings Houston in 1988 in Salt Lake City, Utah. They were married for 25 years.Don is survived by his loving wife, Marva; Carolyn Lytle Garrett; children, Kelly Ann (William) Palmer, D. Scott (Estella) Houston, Bret Jon Houston, Patrick G. (Melissa) Houston, Mike (Karen) Houston, David Houston, Virginia (Andrew) Dickinson; step-children, Denise (Bob) Lewis, DawnLynn (Errol) Heuer; siblings, Beth Luke, Joseph Stanley (Georgia) Houston, Theresa (Lloyd) Graff, Virginia (R. James) Naegle, Mary Grace Houston; 24 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Prince and H. Clark Houston and brother-in-law, Boyd Luke.Funeral services for Don will be held on Saturday, November 9, 2013 at 11:00 am at the Union Fort 4th Ward, 6720 South 1300 East. A viewing will be held on Friday evening from 6-8 pm at the Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 South Highland Drive and again on Saturday morning at the church from 9:30-10:30 am prior to the service.
